Teaching & Learning Objectives of Chinese Language

(华文课程的总目标)

华文课程是以“理想教育成果”为宗旨,以“核心技能与价值观”为基础,兼顾国民教育、思维能力、资讯科技、社交技能与情绪管理的学习等方面,从而拟定课程总目标。华文课程的总目标包括:

1. 培养语言能力

  • 能以华语与人交谈,能针对日常生活话题发表意见。
  • 能阅读适合程度的儿童读物,能主动利用各种资源多阅读。
  • 能根据图意或要求写内容较丰富的短文,能在生活中用华文表达自己的感受。

2. 提高人文素养

  • 培养积极的人生态度与正确的价值观。
  • 认识并传承优秀的华族文化。
  • 关爱家人,关心社会,热爱国家。
  • 热爱生活,感受美,欣赏美。

3. 培养通用能力

  • 发展思维能力,能发挥想象力和创造力,具备分析问
  • 具备基本的自学能力,能运用所学的知识。
  • 能借助资讯科技进行学习,与人沟通。

Malay Language Framework

Pendidikan Bahasa Melayu di Singapura adalah untuk membentuk setiap murid menjadi individu yang mempunyai ciri-ciri Arif Budiman – insan berilmu yang berbakti kepada masyarakat. Pengajaran Bahasa Melayu berperanan untuk melengkapkan setiap murid dengan ilmu, kemahiran dan sikap untuk menajadi insan sedemikian. Visi ini menyediakan satu hala tuju bagi guru dan murid Bahasa Melayu untuk membina kefasihan berbahasa dan penghayatan budaya.

KURIKULUM BAHASA MELAYU

MATLAMAT :

Matlamat Kurikulum Bahasa Melayu peringkat sekolah rendah adalah untuk membolehkan murid mengenali dan memahami bahasa dan budaya Melayu sebagai sebahagian daripada masyarakat majmuk Singapura. Dengan itu, murid dapat berkomunikasi dengan menggunakan bahasa Melayu baku untuk memenuhi keperluan diri dan perhubungan social dalam konteks masyarakat Singapura.

OBJEKTIF :

Pada akhir pembelajaran Bahasa Melayu di sekolah rendah, murid dapat :

  1. mendengar dan memahami pengucapan dengan teliti dalam situasi formal dan tidak formal dan memberikan tindak balas atau respons yang wajar
  2. bertutur dengan petah menggunakan sebutan baku dan intonasi yang betul tentang perkara-perkara yang berkaitan dengan diri dan sekitarnya
  3. membaca pelbagai bahan bercetak dan bahan media elektronik dan digital dengan menggunakan teknik membaca yang sesuai dan berkesan untuk memperoleh maklumat, idea dan pengetahuan serta memberikan respons yang sesuai
  4. menulis pelbagai jenis teks berdasarkan pelbagai tajuk dan untuk pelbagai tujuan, khalayak dan situasi
  5. berfikir secara kritis dan kreatif untuk meneroka, mereka cipta, menyelesaikan masalah, mencapai persetujuan bersama dan membuat keputusan tentang sesuatu perkara melalui penggunaan bahasa secara kritis dan kreatif.
  6. mengenali dan memahami budaya dan nilai-nilai murni masyarakat Melayu serta budaya dan nilai-nilai murni negara dan kaum-kaum lain
  7. memupuk minat membaca dan menjadikannya amalan ke arah membina budaya belajar sepanjang hayat.


PENGAJARAN DAN PEMBELAJARAN

Sejajar dengan hasrat Kementerian Pendidikan : Kurangkan Mengajar, Lebihkan Mengajar (Teach Less, Learn More), guru digalakkan agar menjalankan pengajaran dan pembelajaran yang dapat melibatkan murid secara aktif. Sehubungan dengan ini, sebanyak 15-20% daripada waktu kurikulum Bahasa Melayu dijadikan ‘ruang putih’ bagi setiap peringkat dari darjah 1 hingga darjah 6. Dengan adanya ‘ruang putih’ ini, guru berpeluang :

  • mempelbagaikan dan menggunakan pedagogi yang efektif mengikut keupayaan murid supaya murid dapat terlibat secara aktif dalam mempelajari Bahasa Melayu.
  • membina dan melaksanakan kurikulum berasaskan sekolah untuk memenuhi pelbagai keperluan dan keupayaan murid.

Teaching & Learning of MTL @ P1 & 2

Primary 1 and 2 HA Overview

At Lower Primary, explicit lessons on strategies that pupils can use for the recognition and understanding of CL characters will be taught. There is a greater emphasis on speaking, listening. Strategies such as role-playing, verse/choral reading and recitation will be adopted more widely. Pictorial reading materials are also used to capture pupils’ interest in reading.

10’CMT

The effective integration of ICT to enrich teaching and learning.

10'CMT is a pedagogical model that enables self-paced, differentiated learning of Mother Tongue in an ICT-based learning environment eg. School Computer Labs. YTPS has embarked on this programme since 2010 by the TL teachers. Currently, all three languages are involved in this programme:

a) CL- Selected Primary 2 & 3 pupils;

b) ML – Primary 1and 2 pupils &

c) TL – Primary 1 & 2 pupils.

PAL (IP) – Reading & CME values

The programme aims to inculcate good reading habits and good moral values in our pupils. To this end, Book Sharing sessions are conducted during PAL to enthuse pupils to read. In each session, teachers lead pupils in a discussion on their learning points.

MTL – Reading Programme

This is a structured reading programme using resources such as Di Zi Gui, San Zi Jing(CL) and other selected story books to promote pupils’ interest in reading of MTL books. It also helps to reinforce character development and inculcate moral values.
For ML pupils, an Extensive Reading Programme is carried out with the objective of promoting reading of ML storybooks amongst pupils. It is conducted as a class reading activity fortnightly. 

Public Speaking – Best Speaker Challenge

With greater emphasis on Speaking for lower primary, the “Best Speaker Challenge’ provides greater opportunities for pupils to practise their oral communication skills and to boost their confidence in speaking mandarin in public.  “Best Speaker Challenge” is conducted during recess on a rotational basis for P1 and P2 MT classes. Pupils will present a short speech to their fellow schoolmates during recess.  All presenters are awarded a Certificate of Participation as a form of encouragement and recognition for their effort.

Infusing ICT into Teaching and Learning

ICT skills are identified and taught at each level in a progressive manner. ICT infused lessons include the introduction of Hansvision for CL and Murasu Anjal for TL. These lessons are interactive in nature and encourage our pupils to be self-directed and independent learners.

Teaching & Learning of MTL @ P3 & 4

Primary 3 HA Overview

There is a greater emphasis on teaching pupils reading skills at this level.  A Structured Reading Programme is planned to encourage pupils to read relevant and interesting MT books so as to improve their vocabulary. Pupils' reflections and sharing sessions on books they have read are carried out each term to monitor pupils' reading progress. Bite-sized assessments are carried out to assess pupils' listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. In addition to the bite-sized assessments, all Primary 3 pupils will be taking their SA1 & SA2 examinations at the end of each semester.

P4 Project Work

All P4 pupils (including pupils taking NTIL, Hindi & exempted from MT) are involved in Project Work. Pupils are guided by the Creative Problem Solving (CPS) process and are assessed at various stages. Pupils who are not taking any MT language will be taught by an English-medium teacher and will submit their work in English Language.Public Speaking – Best Speaker Challenge Primary 3 & 4 pupils participate in the “Best Speaker Challenge” to enhance their public speaking skills. The activity is conducted during recess on a rotational basis. All presenters are awarded a Certificate of Participation as a form of encouragement and recognition for their effort.

MT Reading Programme

This is a structured reading programme which adopts Chinese Literature Xi You Ji and other selected story books to promote pupils’ interest in reading of MTL books. It also serves to reinforce character development and inculcate good moral values.

For ML pupils, an Extensive Reading Programme is carried out with the objective of promoting reading of ML storybooks amongst pupils. It is conducted as a class reading activity fortnightly.  

Little Scholars for P4 High Progress pupils

To stretch pupils’ potential to the fullest, pupils who have achieved good results and have shown great interest in their MT language are selected for Little Scholars Programme.  Enrichment workshops are planned for the pupils such as Speech and Drama Workshop, Creative-writing workshop to enhance their writing and oral presentation skills.  They are also selected to represent the school and participate in various external competitions that the school has identified for the three MT languages.

Teaching & Learning of MTL @ P5 & 6

ICT project : ipod/ imovie

This project is planned with the objectives of motivating pupils to learn by infusing IT into CL teaching and learning, as well as for pupils to learn beyond the classroom. In small groups of 4 to 5, pupils write their scripts, prepare video clips and edit their work to achieve the best production. 

MTL – Reading Programme

Pupils are also strongly encouraged to read books that are recommended from our School Library or National Library Board.  The school has also collaborate with the National Library Board for book promotion and mass borrowing. 

For P5 ML pupils, an Extensive Reading Programme is carried out with the objective of promoting reading of ML storybooks amongst pupils. It is conducted as a class reading activity fortnightly. 

Amazing Me

This programme provides a platform for pupils to learn their MT language through pupil-centred and ICT-infused activities.  Various learning stations are set up to enhance pupils’ learning in a fun way.

Internationalisation Programme (P5)


Understand that creating a good learning environment is crucial to pupils’ learning, the school have been creating opportunities to send the Primary 5 pupils to overseas visits to schools of choice to learn more about their Mother Tongue language and culture. The pupils had lessons in the local school and visited places of interests.  They have enjoyed themselves very much and felt that they have gained very much from the trip.  


Other activities/ programmes to support teaching and learning of CL and enhance culture awareness:

Examples of interesting and meaningful activities are:
Chinese New Year Activities: Chinese Calligraphy
Dumpling Festival: Dumpling and Paper Boat Making by pupils
Mothers’ Day: Collaborated with CIP committee to make paper flowers for fund-raising.

Reading Mum P4 to P6

This is a reading programme aimed to engage pupils’ interest in reading. Managed by the Parent volunteers every Wednesdays, pupils are provided with guidance in identifying letters in the alphabet and fluency in reading.

Inter-class competitions

Various Inter-class competitions are conducted for different levels to make teaching and learning of MT more exciting and fun.  These competitions are carried out as post-exam activities and during MT Fortnight. 

ML/TL – MT fortnight

To arouse pupils’ interest in MTL, fun elements are incorporated into the teaching and learning of mother tongue languages. Pupils are given the opportunity to explore their heritage and culture. Parents and community groups also work in partnership to conceptualise and organise meaningful and relevant activities to engage our young learners.

Conversational Chinese/ Malay Programme (CCM)

The aims of the CCM programme are: 
to strengthen social cohesion among the races in Singapore; and to enable Singaporeans to have some grounding in the language so that they could pick up the language more easily should they need it for economic or other reasons in adult life


Support

Parents’ Conference

The MTL Department conducts Parent Conference for parents of Primary 5 pupils. The aim of this Conference is to familiarise parents with the PSLE MT components. This will help parents understand how their children are assessed so that they can provide further support to their children at home.
